Who's Well Who's Water | Akbar-Birbal

Today's story is a very short story from the collection of Akbar Birbal.

Once upon a time, there was a cunning man who sold his well to a farmer. The very next day in the morning the farmer went to take out some water from the well. As soon he was about to draw the water, the same man who sold the well came and stopped him.

He said, "I have sold you the well, not the water, so you cannot draw the water from the well.” The farmer tried to talk to him but the man didn't listen.

With no other option left the farmer decided to go to King Akbar's court. He described everything to the Emperor and asked for justice.

King Akbar didn't hear this kind of case before. He decided to call his best man on the job, Birbal. Birbal called the man who sold the well to the farmer. Birbal asked, “Why don’t you let him use the water of the well. You have sold the well to the farmer.” The man replied, “Birbal, I have sold the well to the farmer, not the water. He has no right to draw the water from the well.”

Birbal understood that the man is not a good man and he is doing it knowingly. Then Birbal smiled and said to him, “Good, but look, since you have sold the well to this farmer, and you claim that water is yours, then you have no right to keep your water in the farmer’s well. Either you pay rent to the farmer to keep your water in his well, or you take that out of his well immediately.”

The man understood, that his trick has failed. He couldn't do anything and the farmer got his well and water both.
