Lord Rama, Shabari and the Half Eaten Fruits | Mythological Story

This story is from the Indian Epic Ramayan. It starts with a girl Shabari whose family were hunters. But Shabari never liked this and even left the family to find the spirituality in the world. After wandering for days she finally landed and settled in the ashram of Sage Mathanga.

Shabari greatly devoted herself to the tasks of the ashram. One day, while his last day was coming, Sage Mathanga blessed Shabari and told her that because of her good deeds she will seek darshan of Lord Rama.

Shabari waited for years for the blessed moment. While searching for Sita, Lord Rama and Lakshman encountered Shabari. Till this time Shabari became old too. Shabari's wait finally got over. She quickly gathered some wild fruits for Rama and offered him with great devotion. Before serving she checked each fruit by tasting whether it is sweet or not and then only offered to Rama.

Lakshman didn't felt so good as the offering was being tasted and then given to Rama. But Rama felt so much pure love and devotion of the old Shabari. Rama told Lakshman that these were the sweetest fruits he has eaten because it was served with love. Shabari then directed Lord Rama towards Hunuman and Sugreev who would later become his aides in his battle against Ravana.

Before leaving Lord Rama asked Shabari whether she has any wish. She asked to unite her soul with her Guru Sage Mathanga. Lord Rama granted her the wish and her body disappeared and she got united with her Guru.
