Once there was a rich man in the city of King Akbar. He had heard about Birbal's intelligence but he never met him personally. He took permission of King Akbar and invited Birbal for a dinner.
Birbal reached the man's home. To his surprise, he was not alone. There were many people who were there at the dinner party. Finally, Birbal met the rich man.
Birbal asked the man, I thought we had a private dinner but who are all these people. The host told, "These are all my servants in disguise. However, there is twist in the story. There is also a gentleman in the crowd who is my other guest apart from you. I would like you to identify the other guest."
Birbal agreed on his strange request. He said. "I will tell you who is the other guest, but you have to tell everyone a joke!"
The host didn't understand but he wanted to see what Birbal will do. The rich man told everyone one joke, probably was one of the worst jokes but still, everyone laughed.
Birbal smiled and said I have identified the gentleman who is your other guest. He pointed towards one of the men.
The host was shocked, "Yes Birbal you are absolutely right. But I still didn't get how you found out the person."
“It was simple. All your servants laughed, in fear of offending you by not laughing, while your guest did not even as much as a smile.”
“Ah, finally Birbal identified the guest correct. You truly are as clever and intelligent as people claim you to be! I am greatly honored to be in your company!” the host replied, smiling.
