Once upon a time, Tenali Raman embarked on a long journey. In those days, traveling between cities often meant crossing dense forests on foot. Along the way, he encountered a fellow traveler who seemed anxious.
“This area is notorious for thieves,” the man said nervously. “I fear they might rob me. May I join you on your journey?” Raman, always kind-hearted, agreed without hesitation.
That evening, they found a place to rest for the night. Raman, exhausted, quickly fell into a deep sleep. The other traveler, however, had ulterior motives. He was a thief who had a reputation for robbing unsuspecting travelers. Seizing the opportunity, he quietly searched under Raman’s pillow but found nothing. He then rifled through Raman’s pockets, finding them empty. Frustrated, he unwrapped the bundle Raman was carrying, but it contained no valuables.
The next morning, they continued their journey. That night, they stopped again. Raman fell asleep, and the thief resumed his search but still found no trace of money or valuables.
Eventually, they reached their destination, the revered city of Tirupati. As they prepared to part ways, the thief couldn’t contain his curiosity. “I confess, I am a thief. I’ve never failed to find my loot before, but this time I was unsuccessful. Please tell me where you hid your money, or I won’t be able to rest peacefully.”
Raman, with a knowing smile, replied, “I knew you were a thief the moment I saw you. I hid the money in a place you would never think to look.”
The thief, puzzled, asked, “But where did you hide it? I searched everywhere!”
“Did you check under your own pillow?” Raman inquired.
The thief was baffled. “I searched under your pillow, not mine. Why would I look for your money under my own pillow?”
“That’s exactly where I hid it,” Raman explained. “I was certain you would never think to look for it there.”
Moral -
"This story teaches us that sometimes, the best way to protect what is valuable is to use our intelligence to anticipate the actions of others. Cleverness and foresight can outwit even the most skilled adversaries. It reminds us that understanding others’ behavior can help us safeguard our own interests effectively."
