When Ganesha broke his tusk | Mythological Story

This is the story of why Ganesha Chaturthi came into existence. Ganesha is the God of wisdom. He loves Modaks ( a type of sweet ) a lot. One late evening Ganesha was returning home on his ride, the mouse. The mouse couldn't bear the weight of Ganesha for a long ride, as today Ganesha was carrying a lot of modak treats with him and fell down on the way.

All the modaks started falling out on the road. Ganesha started picking up the modaks one by one, suddenly he heard someone laughing. Startled, Ganesha looked left and then right. There was no one. Then he looked up and saw that it was the moon laughing at him.

Ganesha became annoyed with the moon and wanted to throw something at him. He first thought of throwing modak but then he didn't want to waste his favorites on the moon.

Not seeing any other thing nearby to throw Ganesha broke one of his tusks, and threw it at the moon. The laughter stopped. Ganesha’s tusk had found its mark. Hit by the tusk flung by Ganesha, a huge portion of the moon fell off. The moon was now in tears.

"I am sorry. Please forgive me and restore me to my original size again", begged the moon.

Ganesha is very kind. His anger subsided and he said, "Alright! I will grow you to the full size but you will only grow in 11 days. Everyday small part of you will come back"

Since that day the Moon goes through this process of growing and shrinking. The day when the incident took place was Chaturthi, the 4th day of the fortnight thus it is popularly known as Ganesha Chaturthi. People worship and offer special prayers to Ganesha on this day and look away from the moon on this day.
