King Akbar greatly admired Birbal, his chief minister, which stirred jealousy in one of the courtiers. This courtier aspired to become chief minister but couldn't because Birbal held the position. One day, when Akbar praised Birbal, the courtier, unable to contain his jealousy, challenged the king. He argued that Birbal's intelligence was overrated and proposed that if Birbal could answer three challenging questions, he would concede that Birbal was truly wise. Akbar, eager to see Birbal's cleverness in action, agreed.
The three questions were -
Q1. How many stars are in the sky?
Q2. Where is the center of the Earth?
Q3. How many men and women exist in the world?
Akbar presented these questions to Birbal and warned him that failure to answer them would mean stepping down from his position as chief minister.
For the first question, Birbal brought a hairy sheep and said, "There are as many stars in the sky as there are hairs on this sheep. Our courtier friend is welcome to count them if he wishes."
To answer the second question, Birbal drew some lines on the ground and placed an iron rod at the intersection, stating, "This is the center of the Earth. The courtier can verify it if he has any doubts."
For the third question, Birbal remarked, "It is impossible to count the exact number of men and women in the world because there are some individuals, like our courtier friend, who do not easily fit into either category. Therefore, only if such unclassifiable people are eliminated can one determine the exact count."
