विशाला नाम की नगरी में पदमनाभ नाम का राजा राज करता था। उसी नगर में अर्थदत्त नाम का एक साहूकार रहता था। अर्थदत्त के अनंगमंजरी नाम की एक सुन्दर कन्या थी। उसका विवाह साहूकार ने एक धनी साहूकार के पुत्र मणिवर्मा के साथ कर दिया। मणिवर्मा पत्नी को बहुत चाहता था, पर पत्नी उसे प्यार नहीं करती थी।

One evening, as they were assembled on the bank of the pond, they saw a few fishermen approaching. They had nets and big baskets with them, which were full of fishes that they had caught.

एक बार महाराज कृष्णदेव राय ने सुना कि उनके नगर में चूहों ने आतंक फैला रखा है। चूहों से छुटकारा पाने के लिए महाराज ने एक हजार बिल्लियां पालने का निर्णय लिया। महाराज का आदेश होते ही एक हजार बिल्लियां मंगवाई गयी। उन बिल्लियों को नगर के लोगों में बांटा जाना था। जिसे बिल्ली दी गयी उसे साथ में एक गाय भी दी गयी ताकि उसका दूध पिलाकर बिल्ली को पाला जा सके।

दूसरे बंदर ने सुझाया "देखो, यहां कितनी सूखी पत्तियां गिरी पड़ी हैं। इन्हें इकट्ठा कर हम ढेर लगाते हैं और फिर उसे सुलगाने का उपाय सोचते हैं।"
