शहरजाद ने कहा कि हे स्वामी, एक वृद्ध और धार्मिक प्रवृत्ति का मुसलमान मछुवारा मेहनत करके अपने स्त्री-बच्चों का पेट पालता था। वह नियमित रूप से प्रतिदिन सवेरे ही उठकर नदी के किनारे जाता और चार बार नदी में जाल फेंकता था। एक दिन सवेरे उठकर उसने नदी में जाल डाला। उसे निकालने लगा तो जाल बहुत भारी लगा। उसने समझा कि आज कोई बड़ी भारी मछली हाथ आई है लेकिन मेहनत से जाल दबोच कर निकाला तो उसमें एक गधे की लाश फँसी थी। वह उसे देखकर जल-भुन गया, उसका जाल भी गधे के बोझ से जगह-जगह फट गया था।

जो प्रयत्न करते हैं, वे कुछ न कुछ वैसे ही पा ही लेते हैं जैसे कोई मेहनत करने वाला गोताखोर गहरे पानी में जाता है और कुछ ले कर आता है। लेकिन कुछ बेचारे लोग ऐसे भी होते हैं जो डूबने के भय से किनारे पर ही बैठे रह जाते हैं और कुछ नहीं पाते।
